About Us
Who are we? What are we trying to do?
Well, to begin with, we’re two teenagers who love reading but struggle to find good quality literature - books that will improve our minds, not degrade them. We met so many other teenagers with similar concerns that we decided to do something about it, and so Phoenix Reviews was born. (Or hatched.)
We believe that a poor or ‘bad’ book is chiefly one that degrades the human race and the world of literature by relying on detailed descriptions of immorality, and copious amounts of illiterate vulgar language. You may have noticed but a really brilliant book does not need swearing or sordid bedroom scenes to make it’s way into your heart.
We also know that what you read, stays in your head. If you’re trying not to swear, wonderful... but the last thing you’d want to do would be listen to a recording of constant profanity, wouldn’t it? Exactly.
And if you’re trying to be a person of active morals, then you wouldn’t watch a blue movie every day, would you? I thought not. Reading can be even more powerful than music or movies.
That’s why we reckon that keeping your reading standards high will improve your lifestyle, outlook on life, and general sanity. (If you had any to begin with. We didn’t much.) We do not promise that this means you’ll be able to read every book the kid next door is bragging about, nor do we promise that keeping standards is easy work, or just "fun and flowers". It’s often quite the opposite. But we do guarantee you that it will not kill you. And you might be surprised at what a difference it really makes in your life.
Tips for keeping your guidelines above water
When reading a book that you think may be questionable, ask yourself these questions:
- WHY am I reading this book?
Will it benefit me in the long run? - WHY am I having doubts about this book?
Only people endeavouring to attain excellent reading standards will recognise, and listen to ‘The Little Voice’ inside your head. - Think about the most ‘clean living’ person you know.
If you’re religious, think about God, or if you’re Catholic, Mary. Imagine they walk into the room and read the most ‘low’ bits of the book you’ve read so far. What would they say? Would you let them read it, or would you close the book?
You can use this site just for brutally honest reviews. (You can do that at Amazon
too, in fact, we like Amazon so much we’ve linked to it in most reviews.)
Or you can use the site to radically change or help you to continue your new, clean reading life.
It is worth it, I promise you.
Wishing you a long life so you can read a million books,
